Won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance as Aileen Wuornos. Second actress (the first was Kim Basinger) to win an Oscar after appearing naked in Playboy magazine. Charlize began her modeling career in 1991, at 16, when she won a local modeling contest. She started modeling in Europe, and came to New York a year later. She didn't like being a model though, and decided to try her luck with ballet, which had been her biggest passion as a child. At fifteen, Theron witnessed the death of her father, an abusive alcoholic; her mother shot him in self-defense when he attacked her. No charges were ever filed.
